Sets with a history

Servicing a generator that has been around for years

Plenty of Roodepoort generators were bought long ago. Behind the freestanding houses around Ontdekkers Road, in Florida, Discovery, Horison and Wilro Park, a canopy that has stood for ten years usually shows it: hoses and belts gone hard, green crust on the battery clamps, a battery long past its life, seals weeping oil and diesel that has sat in the tank since the last long outage. A service finds those before the next outage does, and tells you which ones are worth fixing.

A newer pattern is the generator kept behind a solar inverter, which we often meet in Weltevreden Park and Strubens Valley. It may only start after several dull days have drained the batteries, so it collects months rather than running hours, and age catches it out first. We service the generator side only (engine, fuel, starter battery, controller and the test run) and leave the inverter and battery bank to whoever installed them.

All generator repairs and engine overhauls are carried out on site at your premises. We book the visit while the mains is on and start the set exactly as we find it before changing anything, so the first visit shows how it really behaves. On Ruimsig and Roodekrans plots the test run includes the borehole pump and the gate motor, which load a set very differently from the house on its own.

Condition check

What a service finds on an older Roodepoort set

Age shows in the same six places on most long-serving generators, whether the set ran hard or hardly at all.

  • Hoses and belts

Rubber hardens and cracks with age even on a set that barely runs. We look for cracking, glazing and slack on the coolant hoses and fan belt, and quote replacements before a hose splits mid-outage.

  • Battery and terminals

Corroded clamps and a tired battery are why an old set only clicks. We clean the terminals, load-test the battery and confirm the charger still keeps it topped up.

  • Fuel that has stood

Diesel left since the last long outage collects water and sludge, and petrol in a portable goes stale and varnishes the carburettor. We check what is in the tank before trusting it.

  • Seals and oil weeps

Old gaskets let oil seep onto the engine and the canopy floor. We trace where it comes from and tell you whether it is a weep to watch or a leak that needs work.

  • The controller’s stored alarms

An older controller keeps a log of failed starts, low oil pressure and high temperature. We read it before resetting anything, because that history explains the set better than one run.

  • The changeover

Switches and contactors age as well. An automatic set gets its changeover checked as a controlled test; a portable on a manual switch gets the switch and its lead inspected.

First visit onwards

Bringing an older set back onto a schedule

A generator that has gone years without regular care needs a starting point before it can follow a plan. This is how we set one.

  • 01

    A condition baseline

The first visit looks at the set as found: how it starts, what the controller has logged, the hoses, battery, fuel and seals, and the reading on the hour meter.

  • 02

    Quoted before any work

Anything beyond the service itself, such as a battery, new hoses or a fuel clean-out, goes on a written quote first, so you decide what an older set is worth.

  • 03

    Readings you keep

You get a record of the visit: date, running hours, work done, parts fitted, readings and findings. On an older set, the next visit’s figures show whether it is holding steady.

  • 04

    Next due, twice over

We note the next service as an hour reading and as a date, and the earlier of the two counts, so a set that seldom runs is not left to age unnoticed.

  • 05

A plan once it is sound

Customised maintenance contracts and SLAs can follow once the set is back in good order, written for that generator after an assessment rather than picked from a list.

  • 06

    An honest repair-or-replace call

If the baseline shows an engine or alternator near the end of its life, we set the repair cost beside the cost of replacing the set and leave the decision with you.

Contract terms are set out on the generator maintenance page. For the rest of the city, see Johannesburg servicing & maintenance.

Common Questions

Roodepoort servicing questions

Is a ten-year-old generator in Florida or Discovery worth servicing?

Usually, if the engine and alternator are sound. A first service on an older set often comes down to a battery, hoses, belts and fresh fuel, a small job next to replacing the whole set. If the baseline shows serious wear, we put the repair cost beside the replacement cost, and our repair-or-replace guide explains how to weigh the two.

What do you check on a set that has not run for months?

The parts that age while an engine waits: the battery and its charger, the fuel, the oil and coolant, and any water or rodent damage inside the canopy. We check those before cranking, then start it and watch it run, rather than forcing a start on stale fuel or a flat battery.

Can you service the generator behind my solar inverter in Weltevreden Park?

Yes, the generator side of it. We service the engine, fuel, starter battery and controller, and check that the set starts and carries the house when it is called on. The inverter, its settings and the battery bank stay with your solar installer; we do not work on them.

Will you test my Ruimsig plot generator with the borehole and gate running?

Yes. A borehole pump and a gate motor both draw a surge as they start, so the test run happens with them switched on rather than on the house alone. If the set struggles at that moment, you get the reading and a plain account of what it means.

How is a shared complex generator in Radiokop, Wilgeheuwel or Little Falls serviced?

Through the trustees or the managing agent, who agree the visit and how residents are told. The changeover is checked as a controlled test on each visit, with a building transfer only when the trustees agree. Body corporate plans have their own page if the complex wants a contract.

Do you maintain office and shop generators in Constantia Kloof, Clearwater and Westgate?

Yes. Office parks in Constantia Kloof, shops around Clearwater Mall and Westgate, and the workshops in Robertville can be serviced outside trading hours, with the transfer tested so the set takes over without anyone pressing a button.

Is Roodepoort on the Johannesburg page or the West Rand page?

Roodepoort has this page of its own and sits under Johannesburg in our coverage. Krugersdorp, Randfontein, Westonaria and the plots beyond them are on the West Rand servicing page, so use that one if your property lies west of Roodepoort.

What does a service on an older Roodepoort set cost?

A basic service (inspection and fluids) is typically R900 to R1,800. If the old battery fails its load test, a replacement is R900 to R2,800. The callout fee is only payable if you do not accept the quotation. If you accept the quotation, the callout fee is waived. Every job is quoted in writing, free, before work starts.
