Generator Not Starting.
Find Why, Then Repair It.
A generator that will not start stays silent, clicks, or never cranks when a start is requested. Silent set, a single click, or an auto-start that never happens are different faults. ProService Generator Repairs diagnoses the start circuit, fuel and control panel on site across Gauteng before any parts are changed.

The Fault
What causes a generator not to start?
A generator that will not start is one of the most common callouts we attend in Gauteng. This page is the set that will not start at all: silent, a click, or no crank. A standby set that only fails when the mains drops, or an engine that fires and then shuts down, is a different fault. Treating them as one “won’t start” problem leads to parts being replaced that were never the cause.
Before any repair, we establish whether the engine is being asked to start at all. A discharged battery, an open emergency stop, a tripped low-oil switch or a controller that is not issuing a start command can look identical to a failed engine. If the starter is not engaging, the fuel system is not the first place to look.
When the starter does engage, we move to fuel delivery, safety interlocks and control-panel inhibit signals. Diesel standby sets often shut down on low oil pressure or high temperature even during cranking if a sender is faulty. Petrol units more often fail at the carburettor, spark plug or stale fuel in the bowl.
We work on residential standby generators and commercial backup sets across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton and the wider Gauteng area. Diagnosis is done on site so you get a clear explanation of the fault and a written quote before work proceeds.

What You Might See
Common no-start symptoms
01
No crank, no sound
Nothing happens when you press start or when mains fail. Often battery voltage, a loose earth, an emergency stop or a controller that is not powered.
02
Single click, then silence
A solenoid click without the engine turning usually points to a weak battery, corroded terminals or a worn starter that is drawing too much current.
03
Cranks then dies
If the engine turns, fires briefly, then stops, that is a different page: either it never really started, or it started and then shut down. Stay here when there is no start at all.
04
Auto-start does nothing
If manual start works and automatic does not, use the not-auto-starting page. This page is a set that will not start from the panel either.
How We Diagnose
Start-circuit checks before parts
- 01
Confirm the start command
We check battery voltage, E-stop, isolators and whether the controller is actually calling for a start.
- 02
Test cranking circuit
Starter current, solenoid operation and earth paths are measured before any fuel-system work begins.
- 03
Check fuel and safety interlocks
Fuel delivery, solenoids and oil/temperature senders are tested if the engine is being asked to run but will not fire.
- 04
Quote, repair and prove start
You get the scope in writing. After the repair we confirm manual and, where fitted, automatic starting.
What We Check
Components involved in a no-start
Battery and charging
State of charge, terminal condition and whether the charger is actually maintaining the battery between outages.
Starter motor
Engagement, current draw and bendix condition. A dragging starter can flatten a healthy battery in a few attempts.
Fuel solenoid and supply
Whether fuel is reaching the engine when the start signal is present, including empty tanks and blocked filters.
Safety switches
Low-oil, high-temperature and emergency-stop circuits that prevent starting even when the engine is sound.
Control panel
Start relays, wiring and controller logs that show why an automatic start was refused.
Emergency stop and isolators
A bumped E-stop or open isolator is simple, but it is checked first so diagnosis is not wasted on the engine.
Diesel and Petrol
The first split is crank versus no crank
Diesel and petrol no-start faults overlap on battery and control issues, then diverge quickly. Diesel standby generators in Johannesburg office parks and Pretoria estates often fail to start because glow plugs, lift pumps or contaminated fuel never get the engine over compression on a cold morning. Petrol units at homes more often sit with gummed carburettors after weeks of unused fuel.
If the engine is turning strongly but never fires, the fault is usually fuel or ignition — see our page on generators that crank but will not start. If there is no crank at all, stay on this diagnosis path first.
Diesel standby
Glow plugs, lift pumps, fuel solenoids and controller inhibits
Petrol units
Spark, stale fuel, carburettor bowls and recoil or electric start
Auto-start sets
AMF/ATS command, start relays and transfer inhibit
When to call
After fuel, E-stop and obvious battery checks — do not keep cranking

Google Review
Our primary generator just clicked and refused to crank. The technician traced the electrical path and found a heavily corroded earth strap, replacing it with heavy-duty cabling to solve the issue.

Fast fault-finding when it won't start.
Common Questions
Generator not starting — questions we hear
Why does my generator not start during loadshedding?
If it will not start from the panel either, stay on this page: battery, starter, fuel or a shutdown. If it starts in manual and only fails when the mains drops, that is the automatic-start page.
Can low oil stop a generator from starting?
Yes. Many sets will not crank, or will crank then shut down immediately, if the oil-pressure switch is open. Sometimes the oil is genuinely low. Sometimes the sender or wiring is faulty and the engine is being protected against a false reading.
Should I keep trying the starter?
No. Repeated cranking flattens the battery, overheats the starter and can flood a petrol engine. Stop after a few attempts and have the start circuit diagnosed on site.
Is a generator that clicks once a battery problem?
Often, but not always. A click can be a weak battery, a poor earth, a failing starter solenoid or a start relay in the panel. Voltage at the terminals under load tells us which it is.
Why will my generator not start?
A generator may not start because of the battery, fuel, a low-oil shutdown, an emergency stop or a controller that will not issue a start. A silent set and a set that cranks are different jobs, so the first question is what you hear.
Can a fuel problem stop a diesel generator from starting?
Yes. A blocked filter, air in the lines, contaminated diesel or a fuel solenoid can leave a diesel cranking with no fire. Those checks sit on the fuel system repairs page and come before an injection pump is condemned.
When should I book a generator technician?
Book when a few start attempts have failed, when an alarm is latched, or when the set is needed for a building. Stop cranking. Call 082 057 4605 with the suburb, the fuel type and what the controller is showing.
