Load Bank Testing · Gauteng
Load Bank Testing.
Know Before You Need It.
Standby generators that rarely run under full load develop faults that only emerge during a real power event. Load bank testing verifies your generator can deliver its rated output — before that moment arrives.
- Checked under a controlled load
- Voltage, frequency and temperature noted
- A written note of the readings
- Standby diesel and commercial sets

The Service
Why Load Bank Testing Matters
Standby generators often run only during testing or actual power outages, rarely experiencing their full rated load. Over time, light-duty operation leads to problems that only emerge under heavy load — precisely when you need the generator most. Load bank testing reveals these hidden issues before they cause failures during actual emergencies.
A load bank places a controlled electrical load on the generator, allowing us to test performance at 50%, 75%, and 100% of rated capacity. During testing, we monitor voltage stability, frequency regulation, temperature rise, fuel consumption, and overall operating behaviour. This data confirms whether your generator can actually deliver the power it is rated for.
Wet stacking is unburned fuel that can build up when a diesel rarely carries a real load. A loaded run is one way that deposit is reduced. The test records what the set did. It does not certify that the exhaust is clear or that later damage is prevented.
The useful result is the readings: voltage, frequency and temperature under load. Those notes are for the owner of that generator. They are not an insurance certificate.

Testing Stages
Stepped Load Testing to Full Capacity
- 50%
Half-load test
Initial warm-up stage. Voltage, frequency and temperature rise monitored as the generator stabilises under load.
- 75%
Three-quarter load
Load increased to 75% of rated capacity. Fuel consumption, cooling performance and output stability checked.
- 100%
Full rated capacity
Generator tested at its full rated kVA output. Any capacity shortfalls, voltage droop or thermal issues are identified here.
What We Monitor
Measured and documented at every stage
01
Output voltage stability
Voltage is measured under increasing load to confirm it stays within acceptable limits at all stages.
02
Frequency regulation
Engine speed and governor response are verified to maintain correct Hz output under varying load.
03
Thermal performance
Coolant temperature, oil temperature, and exhaust temperature are monitored throughout the test.
04
Loaded running
A loaded run can reduce deposits left by light-load use. The visit records what the set did. It does not certify that wet stacking is gone.
05
Fuel consumption rate
Actual fuel burn at rated load is measured and compared against manufacturer specifications.
06
Readings from the test
The steps and the readings are written down for that generator. That note is not an insurer certificate.

Common Questions
Load bank testing — questions
What is generator load bank testing?
It is a controlled run under load so voltage, frequency, cooling and the engine can be watched together. A five-minute idle does not show those faults.
Why test a standby generator under load?
Standby sets often pass a light test and fail when the building transfers. Load shows blocked radiators, weak fuel delivery and voltage that will not hold.
Do you publish a maximum kVA for load testing?
No. Whether a test can be done depends on the set and the site. The plate and the access decide the visit. A figure is not guessed.
Can load testing find a cooling problem?
Yes. Temperature faults often appear only after the set has carried load for a while. That is one reason the test exists.
Is a load test the same as a service?
No. A service is oil, filters and inspection. A load test proves behaviour under load. They are often booked together, and they are still different jobs.
Can I load the generator by switching the building myself?
Do not use the building as an experiment. Transfer and live switchgear stay with the agreed test. Describe what you need and the visit is planned around that.
