Generator Installation Across Gauteng

Generator installation covers placement, electrical connection, ATS and controller setup, and commissioning of a standby set. ProService Generator Repairs does this across Gauteng as an additional service. Repairs, servicing and maintenance remain the main work. The scope follows the generator and the site.

  • Homes, commercial and industrial
  • ATS and controller setup where required
  • Commissioning before handover
  • Servicing continues afterwards

Installation types

Generator Installation Services

These are the installation jobs that can be booked. Not every site needs every item, and a portable petrol setup is not planned like a large diesel plant.

  • Standby generator installed beside a residential house

    Residential Generator Installation

A house or estate standby set, placed where it can be reached for service and connected for the property it is meant to cover.

  • Technicians installing a standby generator at a commercial building

    Commercial Generator Installation

Installation for offices, shops, complexes and other business premises, planned around the site rather than a house load.

  • Large industrial diesel generator being positioned in a plant room

    Industrial Generator Installation

Larger diesel sets for factories, plants and heavy standby, where access, lifting and the base are part of the plan.

  • Silent canopy standby generator on a concrete base

    Standby Generator Installation

A canopy set arranged to wait for a mains failure, rather than a portable frame that is pulled out by hand.

  • Diesel generator canopy open during installation

    Diesel Generator Installation

Diesel standby and commercial sets, including placement and the checks that belong with a diesel installation.

  • Small open-frame petrol generator being set up

    Petrol Generator Installation

Smaller petrol and open-frame sets, where that is the machine being put in place. These are not treated as industrial diesels.

  • Automatic transfer switch cabinet open beside a generator installation

    ATS & Automatic Start Setup

Changeover and automatic-start integration, so a standby set can be asked to start when the mains fails.

  • Technician connecting a laptop to a generator controller during setup

    Generator Controller Setup

Controller configuration during installation, including automatic start and the alarms the set should show.

  • Compact standby generator installed at a house

    Single-Phase Generator Installation

Smaller residential and light-commercial sets on a single-phase supply.

  • Large three-phase diesel generator installed at a warehouse

    Three-Phase Generator Installation

Larger commercial and industrial sets where the supply and the generator are three-phase.

Generator Installation for Homes & Businesses

A home install is usually a standby set that should be ready when the supply drops. A business install may be a shop, an office, a complex or a warehouse. An industrial install is the larger diesel, where the machine, the access and the load are a different scale.

Replacement installations are included when an older set is coming out and another is going in. Petrol generator setup is included when the unit is a smaller petrol or open-frame machine. Diesel installation is the usual path for canopy standby sets.

This page does not replace generator repairs, generator servicing or generator maintenance. Those stay the primary services. Installation is booked when a set is being placed, not as a substitute for a repair.

What Is Involved in Installing a Generator?

The work depends on the generator and the property. A typical installation can include placing the set, preparing a base where one is needed, integrating it with the electrical installation, and commissioning what was agreed.

Some jobs also include automatic starting, an ATS, and controller setup. Some do not. A manual changeover is not described as an automatic system, and a petrol frame is not given an industrial plant-room specification.

Generator Site Assessment

Installation planning may consider the items below. Two sites with the same kVA can still need different work.

  • Electrical requirements
  • Generator size
  • Phase
  • Property layout
  • Generator position
  • Ventilation
  • Access
  • Noise considerations
  • Exhaust routing
  • Fuel requirements
  • ATS or changeover requirements

The assessment is how the quote is built. It is not a promise that every installation includes the full list.

Choosing the Correct Generator Size

Generator sizing depends on what the site actually runs, not on a canopy that looks large enough.

  • Connected load
  • Starting current
  • Motors
  • Refrigeration
  • Pumps
  • Lifts
  • UPS equipment
  • Sensitive electronics
  • Single-phase or three-phase supply
  • Standby or prime application
  • Future requirements

Read the size bands on generator sizes and the difference between kVA and kW on generator kVA to kW. A power factor of 0.8 is an example on that page, not a figure to force onto every plate.

Where Should a Generator Be Installed?

Position is chosen so the set can run and still be serviced later. The discussion covers:

  • Ventilation
  • Access for maintenance
  • Exhaust routing
  • Distance from occupied areas where that applies
  • Weather protection
  • A generator base or plinth
  • Service access
  • Safe electrical integration

This is not a guide to cutting exhaust through a wall, opening a live board, or placing a set against a bedroom window. Those decisions are made on site by the people doing the installation.

Automatic Generator Starting & ATS Integration

Where the system is designed for automatic operation, the sequence is straightforward:

  1. Mains power fails.
  2. The ATS or controller detects the failure.
  3. The generator receives a start command.
  4. The generator starts.
  5. The load transfers where the system is designed for automatic transfer.
  6. Mains returns.
  7. The load transfers back.
  8. The generator completes its cooldown and shutdown sequence where that is configured.

Generator Controller Setup During Installation

Depending on the generator configuration, controller work during installation can include:

  • Automatic start setup
  • AMF configuration
  • ATS interaction
  • Voltage and frequency monitoring
  • Engine sensor configuration
  • Alarm setup
  • Maintenance timer configuration
  • Remote-start input configuration
  • Commissioning

Controller makes, modules and programming sit on generator controllers. Not every module can be programmed the same way, and a controller is not bypassed to force a start.

Single-Phase and Three-Phase Installation

Single-phase installation is the smaller residential or light-commercial path. Three-phase installation is the commercial and industrial path, where the building supply and the generator are both three-phase.

A three-phase set can feed some single-phase loads only within the limit of each phase. That is not an instruction to rewire a board or to bridge phases. The comparison is explained on single-phase vs three-phase generators.

How an install proceeds

Our Generator Installation Process

Actual installation requirements depend on the generator and site.

  1. 01

    Site assessment

Look at the property, the supply and what the generator is expected to carry.

  2. 02

    Confirm generator requirements

Fuel, duty and how the set is meant to start.

  3. 03

    Confirm generator size

Use the load and the data plate, not a guess from the canopy.

  4. 04

    Confirm single-phase or three-phase

Match the generator to the supply it will work with.

  5. 05

    Select installation position

Ventilation, access, exhaust and noise are considered together.

  6. 06

    Assess electrical integration

How the generator meets the existing installation.

  7. 07

    Determine ATS/changeover requirements

Automatic transfer, manual changeover, or neither.

  8. 08

    Prepare generator position/base where required

A plinth or base only when the site needs one.

  9. 09

    Install generator

Place the set in the position that was agreed.

  10. 10

    Complete required integration

The electrical and control connections that this job includes.

  11. 11

    Configure controller/automatic start where applicable

Only on sets that use a controller for that function.

  12. 12

    Test generator operation

A controlled start and a check of what the set is doing.

  13. 13

    Test automatic transfer where applicable

Watched only when an ATS is part of the installation.

  14. 14

    Commission the installation

Confirm the agreed scope runs as intended.

  15. 15

    Explain future servicing and maintenance

A new set still needs planned visits after it is installed.

Generator Servicing After Installation

A generator still needs servicing and maintenance after it is installed, including sets that run only during outages. Oil, filters, coolant, the battery and a start test do not wait for a high hour reading.

Book that work on generator servicing and generator maintenance. How often a visit is due is discussed on how often a generator should be serviced and generator service intervals. There is no single interval that fits every machine.

Generator Installation Service Areas

Installation visits are arranged across Gauteng, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Centurion, Midrand, the East Rand / Ekurhuleni, Randburg, the West Rand and the Vaal / Southern Gauteng. Suburb pages under those regions stay as they are. A callout is booked from generator callouts or contact.

Common Questions

Generator installation questions

How do I know what size generator I need?

Size follows the connected load, the starting current of motors, and whether the supply is single-phase or three-phase. A photo of an existing data plate helps. The bands on the generator sizes page are a guide, not a sizing certificate.

Do you install generators for homes?

Yes. Residential standby installation is part of this work, alongside the repairs, servicing and maintenance that remain the main services. The visit is planned around the house, the position and the supply.

Do you install commercial generators?

Yes, for offices, retail, complexes and similar premises when the set and the site can be taken on. A commercial install is quoted from the generator, the access and the electrical integration.

Do you install diesel generators?

Yes. Diesel standby, commercial and industrial sets are the usual installation. Petrol setup is booked when the machine is actually petrol.

Can a generator start automatically when power fails?

Only when the installation includes a controller and changeover arrangement that is designed to do that. A manual set does not become automatic because it has been placed on a plinth.

What is an ATS?

An automatic transfer switch moves the load between the mains and the generator when the system is built for that. It is not a switch to improvise, and live mains work is not a DIY task.

Where should a standby generator be positioned?

Where it has ventilation, a route for exhaust, access for later service, and a sensible distance from occupied rooms. Weather protection and a suitable base matter too. The exact spot is chosen on site.

Does an installed generator still require servicing?

Yes. Low running hours do not replace oil, filters, coolant, battery care or a start test. Servicing and maintenance continue after installation.
