Generator Controller Repairs & Fault Diagnosis

The controller is the electronic module that reads sensors, displays alarms, and allows or blocks a start. ProService Generator Repairs diagnoses that module across Gauteng, including Deep Sea Electronics and SmartGen units we see on site. That is not a manufacturer authorisation. The wider panel — relays, breakers and wiring — stays on the control panel page.

  • Module, not the whole panel
  • Alarms read, not bypassed
  • DSE and SmartGen seen on site
  • Onsite across Gauteng

The module

What does a generator controller do?

It watches inputs such as oil pressure, temperature, speed and mains status, and it decides whether a start is allowed. In automatic it should accept a start request from the ATS. In manual it should follow the buttons on the panel. A wrong mode, a latched shutdown, or a sensor it does not believe will stop an otherwise healthy engine.

Possible causes include a failed start command, a sensor that is open or shorted, a shutdown that has not been reset, a reading that does not match the engine, a parameter that no longer matches the set, or wiring on an input. Replacing the module before those inputs are checked swaps a box that may be reporting a real fault.

Bypassing a shutdown to make the engine run is not part of the repair. The alarm is identified, the input is tested, and the controller is repaired, reconfigured or replaced only when that is what failed.

What we see on the display

Common generator controller faults

  • Generator controller alarm diagnosis

The text on the screen is the starting point. A shutdown, a warning and a failed start are not cleared by cycling the battery unless the alarm says to reset.

  • DSE generator controllers

Deep Sea modules are common on standby sets. Alarms, inputs and the automatic start are diagnosed on the unit fitted. Listing the brand is not a dealer claim.

  • SmartGen controllers

SmartGen modules are diagnosed the same way: mode, alarms, inputs and whether the start command is reaching the engine. No authorisation is implied.

  • Controller versus wiring fault

A dead input can be the sender, the cable, or the module. The three are separated before a controller is ordered.

  • Controller and ATS problems

If automatic start fails and manual start works, the controller mode and the start signal from the switch are checked together.

  • When does a controller need replacement?

When the module itself is dead, damaged, or will not hold a configuration, and the inputs around it have been proved.

Google reviews of ProService Generator Repairs

  • Google Review

After a lightning strike paralyzed our digital controller, they sourced an upgraded Deep Sea panel, re-wired the relay system, and programmed the parameters flawlessly for a much better interface.

Our Himoinsa unit is critical for our cold room operations. [ProService Generator Repairs] maintains it flawlessly, recently upgrading the Deep Sea controller for better telemetry.

Common Questions

Questions about generator controller repairs

What is a generator controller?

It is the electronic module that shows alarms and allows or blocks starting and stopping.

Is this the same as a control panel repair?

No. This page is the module. The control panel page covers the wider wiring, relays and breakers around it.

Do you work on Deep Sea and SmartGen controllers?

Yes, as modules fitted to generators we service. That is not a manufacturer authorisation.

The screen shows a shutdown. Should I disconnect the sensor?

No. A shutdown can be reporting low oil, high temperature or another real condition. The input is tested, not defeated.

Can a controller stop an automatic start?

Yes. Wrong mode, an active alarm, or a start input that never arrives will leave the engine still when the mains fails.

Do you change settings?

Parameters are checked when the behaviour does not match the engine. They are not rewritten as a way to hide a fault.

What should I photograph?

The controller screen, including the alarm text, and the brand on the module if it is visible.

Service Areas

Onsite visits across Gauteng

Technicians travel to the generator. These are the main Gauteng areas. Suburb pages sit under each region.

What to send before we attend

ProService Generator Repairs confirms an onsite visit from these details. Send what you have. A missing model number does not stop the booking.

Location
The suburb or site, so the visit can be booked in the right area.
Make and model
The generator brand and model, if they are known.
kVA
The size printed on the data plate.
Fuel type
Diesel, petrol, LPG, natural gas, or dual-fuel.
Controller model
The module name on the panel, when it is visible.
Fault or alarm
What the set does, and any text on the screen.
Photos
The generator, the data plate, and the controller or alarm. Send these on WhatsApp.
