Control Panel Repairs.
From Relays to Controllers.

The control panel is the brain of your generator. When it fails, the engine may not start, the load may not transfer, or persistent fault codes prevent operation. We diagnose and repair control systems across all generator types throughout Gauteng.

The Service

Generator Control Panel Repair Across Gauteng

The control panel manages every aspect of your generator's operation — starting sequences, engine parameter monitoring, output control, and automatic load transfer in standby applications. When panel components fail, the consequences range from a generator that will not start at all, to one that runs but shuts down unexpectedly under load, or fails to transfer power to your building when mains is lost.

Control panel problems range from straightforward component failures to complex controller malfunctions. A failed start relay, a faulty fuel solenoid, or a defective oil pressure sender are discrete, repairable faults. A malfunctioning AMF controller with persistent fault codes, a misconfigured ATS that fails to transfer, or corrupted firmware on a digital controller require a different approach. Our technicians are experienced with both.

Controller families worked on include Deep Sea Electronics, ComAp, Woodward and SmartGen. A listed family is not a claim that every model can be repaired or reprogrammed. Fault logs can be read, settings adjusted, firmware updated where that module allows it, and a failed module replaced. A proprietary panel is diagnosed at component level when that is possible, rather than assuming the whole assembly must be replaced.

Older sets with basic mechanical controls can be assessed for a digital AMF controller where that change suits the installation. The assessment says what the new module will and will not do. Off-site monitoring is not part of this service.

Every control panel repair is completed with a full function test. We verify the auto-start sequence, load transfer operation, shutdown protection activation, and fault alarm behaviour before leaving site. The generator must perform correctly through a complete operational cycle — not just power on — before the job is closed.

What We Fix

Common Control Panel Faults

  • 01

    Failed start relays

The generator cranks but does not start, or fails to crank at all despite battery power. Start relay or fuel solenoid failure are common culprits.

  • 02

    Controller fault codes

AMF and ATS digital controllers displaying persistent fault codes — sensor alarms, communication errors, over-speed, under-speed, or shutdown faults.

  • 03

    Automatic transfer failure

Generator starts but does not transfer the load, or fails to retransfer back to mains. ATS contactor or controller configuration faults.

  • 04

    Sensor & sender faults

Oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level senders sending incorrect readings, causing nuisance shutdowns or masking real faults.

  • 05

    Wiring & connection damage

Corroded terminals, rodent damage, vibration-induced chafing, and failed circuit breakers inside the control panel causing intermittent faults.

  • 06

    Controller programming & upgrades

Incorrect settings, outdated firmware, or older mechanical panels requiring upgrade to modern digital controllers for reliable automatic operation.

Controller Alarms

What the alarm usually means

Deep Sea Electronics (DSE), SmartGen, AMF and ATS panels all log events. The brand name is less important than reading the alarm correctly.

  • Shutdown alarms

Oil pressure, high temperature, overspeed or emergency-stop events that stop the set and need the log read, not a reset-and-hope.

  • Start-failure alarms

The controller called for a start and the engine did not fire — battery, fuel solenoid, or a start-attempt limit.

  • Voltage and frequency alarms

Under/over voltage or low-frequency trips that may be AVR, load or governor — not always a failed DSE or SmartGen module.

  • Sensor and maintenance alarms

Senders that read wrongly, or a maintenance-due warning that is inhibiting auto-start until it is cleared correctly.

Our Repair Process

How we approach a control panel fault

  1. 01

    Systematic fault diagnosis

We read fault logs, test sensors and relays individually, and trace wiring methodically. We find the root cause, not just the symptom.

  2. 02

    Targeted component repair

Relays, solenoids, breakers, and sensors replaced as required. We do not swap out the whole panel when a single component has failed.

  3. 03

    Controller programming & configuration

We read, adjust, and restore settings on Deep Sea, ComAp, Woodward, and other major controller brands — including firmware updates where needed.

  4. 04

    Full function test before handover

Auto-start sequence, load transfer, shutdown protection, and fault alarm testing confirmed before leaving site.

Controller Expertise

Controller families seen on Gauteng sets

A generator control panel is the electrical interface around the controller: relays, breakers and wiring that start the set and show alarms. The controller page covers the module. This page covers the panel around it.

Modules commonly seen on Gauteng sets include Deep Sea Electronics, SmartGen, ComAp and Woodward. A listed family is not a claim that every model in that family can be repaired or reprogrammed.

Common Questions

Control panel repairs — questions

What does a generator controller do?

It starts and stops the set, shows alarms, and on many standby machines calls for an automatic start when mains fails. A warning and a shutdown are different messages.

Do you work on DSE controllers?

Yes. Deep Sea alarms are recorded as displayed. The code is not given a meaning from a different module. The circuit it points at is tested.

Do you diagnose SmartGen faults?

Yes. SmartGen panels are handled the same way: write down the alarm, then test. A reset without a cause is not the repair.

Why will the generator not start automatically?

Automatic start needs a charged battery, a controller that sees the supply failure, and no latched shutdown. Any one of those leaves the set silent.

Why does the generator run but the ATS not transfer?

The engine can be healthy while changeover never leaves mains. That is a transfer and sensing fault. Nobody is asked to work inside live switchgear.

Can a controller alarm stop the next start?

Yes. Low oil, high temperature, an emergency stop or a failed start can hold the set off. Read the alarm before the starter is replaced.
