Fuel shutoff

Generator Fuel Solenoid Repairs

The fuel solenoid, or run solenoid, is the device that allows diesel to reach the engine when a start is permitted, and shuts that fuel off when the engine should stop. A crank with no fire, or a start that dies, can be that solenoid. It can also be no fuel in the line, air, a pump, a filter, or a controller that never energised the coil. The solenoid is not bypassed to keep an engine running.

Fuel allowed, or fuel cut

What does a generator fuel solenoid do?

It is an electrical shutoff. Energised, it should let the engine receive fuel. De-energised, it should stop the engine. Some are pull-in and hold coils. Some are a stop solenoid on the pump. The arrangement depends on the engine, so the test follows the part that is fitted, not a generic bypass.

A faulty solenoid can stop a generator starting, and it can stop one that has just fired. Possible causes include a coil that does not pull, wiring that never supplies it, a controller output that is missing, a shutdown command that is still active, or a plunger that is stuck.

Holding the solenoid on with a wire is not a repair. It defeats the stop, and it can leave the engine unable to shut down. The coil supply and the mechanical movement are measured instead.

Start, then stop

Can a faulty fuel solenoid stop a generator starting?

  • Cranks but will not start

If the engine turns and never fires, fuel may not be released. Air, filters and the pump are still in that test. The solenoid is one possible cause, not the only one.

  • Generator starts then stops

A hold coil that drops out, or a stop command that arrives after fire, can kill a start within seconds. That pattern is different from an engine that never fires.

  • Fuel solenoid wiring problems

A broken feed, a poor earth or a connector that has burnt will leave a good coil silent. The supply is checked at the solenoid, not only at the panel.

  • Controller and fuel solenoid faults

The module has to output the run signal. An alarm, a wrong mode or a failed output can look like a dead solenoid.

  • Mechanical solenoid problems

The coil can click and the plunger still not move the fuel lever. Sticking is confirmed by watching the linkage, not by tying it open.

  • How fuel solenoid faults are tested

Supply voltage during crank, coil condition, movement of the plunger and any shutdown command are recorded. Fuel delivery beyond the solenoid is the pump and injector pages.

Google reviews of ProService Generator Repairs

  • Google Review

The engine was turning over vigorously but wouldn't fire. They quickly realized air was trapped in the high-pressure system, bled the injector lines expertly, and got us running immediately.

Our smaller Yanmar diesel unit was serviced promptly and at a very fair price. The technician was friendly, bleeding the fuel lines quickly after we ran it dry.

Common Questions

Questions about generator fuel solenoids

What does a generator fuel solenoid do?

It allows fuel when the engine should run, and cuts fuel when the engine should stop.

Can a fuel solenoid stop the generator starting?

Yes. If it does not open the fuel, the engine can crank and never fire. Filters, air and the pump can do the same thing.

It starts and dies after a few seconds. Could that be the solenoid?

Possible causes include a hold winding that drops out and a controller shutdown. The timing of the stop is part of the test.

Can I tie the solenoid open so it keeps running?

No. That bypasses the shutoff. The engine may then be impossible to stop, and a real shutdown is being ignored.

Is a click from the solenoid proof it is working?

No. A click means the coil tried to move. It does not prove fuel was released.

How is it different from a fuel pump fault?

The solenoid permits or cuts fuel. The pump has to deliver it. A silent solenoid and a pump with no supply are different repairs.

What should I tell you about the shutoff?

Whether it cranks with no fire, or fires and then stops, and any alarm on the controller.

Say whether it fires at all

Crank with no smoke and no fire is a different booking from a start that dies. Include the alarm text if there is any.
