Guide
When to Repair or Replace a Generator
ProService Generator Repairs quotes the repair after diagnosis. Replacement is worth discussing when that quote, the condition of the set, and a machine of the same duty no longer line up. There is no fixed age or percentage on this page.
- Diagnosis before a recommendation
- Written quote before parts are changed
- No fixed age or cost cutoff
- Onsite across Gauteng

The question
Repair is the default until the findings say otherwise
A generator that will not start, will not carry load, or shuts down on a real alarm is a repair job until the inspection shows otherwise. ProService Generator Repairs diagnoses that fault on site across Gauteng, then explains the cause and the proposed work.
Replacement is a separate decision. It depends on whether the failed part can be repaired or sourced, whether the same fault keeps returning, and whether the set still matches the load it is asked to carry. The written repair quote is what gets compared. A percentage of replacement value is not used as a rule.
Choosing another machine is the customer’s decision. If a new set is installed, that is booked as generator installation, not as part of the repair quote.

What is compared
Factors that belong in the decision
Each point is checked on the set in front of the technician. None of them is a cutoff by itself.
Engine condition
Smoke, oil pressure, coolant loss, hard starting and repeat shutdowns are findings. They are not a guess from the year on the canopy.
Alternator condition
Output is tested under load. A winding or excitation fault is assessed on its own page before anyone assumes the whole set should go.
Controller availability
A module is repaired or replaced when it can be configured for that set. Not every model can be reprogrammed, and that limit is said on the visit.
Parts availability
A repair proceeds when the part for that model can be sourced. If it cannot, the quote says so instead of promising a repair.
Repeat failures
The same fault after a completed repair is a reason to compare replacement. One failed start is not.
The load
The data plate and the building load decide whether this set is still the right size. A repair does not change an undersized machine into the right one.

Common Questions
Repair or replace — questions
Does ProService Generator Repairs use a percentage rule?
No. The written repair quote is compared with what another set of the same duty would involve. A 50 percent or 60 percent rule is not used.
Is a generator under a certain age always repaired?
No. Age is context. The engine, alternator, controller, parts and the load decide the recommendation.
What happens before parts are changed?
The fault is explained and the proposed work is quoted. Work follows the scope that is approved.
Where are repair prices discussed?
The generator repair cost page lists the ranges already published for common jobs. This guide does not add a new price.
Can a maintenance plan change the decision?
A maintenance plan is a schedule and a record of visits. It does not promise that an old set will stay the right machine for the load.

Service Areas
Onsite visits across Gauteng
Technicians travel to the generator. These are the main Gauteng areas. Suburb pages sit under each region.
What to send before we attend
ProService Generator Repairs confirms an onsite visit from these details. Send what you have. A missing model number does not stop the booking.
- Location
- The suburb or site, so the visit can be booked in the right area.
- Make and model
- The generator brand and model, if they are known.
- kVA
- The size printed on the data plate.
- Fuel type
- Diesel, petrol, LPG, natural gas, or dual-fuel.
- Controller model
- The module name on the panel, when it is visible.
- Fault or alarm
- What the set does, and any text on the screen.
- Photos
- The generator, the data plate, and the controller or alarm. Send these on WhatsApp.
