Generator Servicing & Maintenance in Sandton

Generator servicing and maintenance in Sandton runs on other people’s rules: building management in the towers, trustees and managing agents in the complexes, gate security in the estates. We service tower plant in Sandton Central, tenant-shared sets in Woodmead, Sunninghill and Rivonia parks, and canopy diesels from Bryanston to Dainfern. Visits are booked for a time that suits you, after hours if needed; for a breakdown, see Sandton generator repairs.

Towers, parks and estates

Servicing a Sandton set means working with the people who run the site

A Sandton Central tower usually has one large three-phase set in the basement and a bulk tank a level or two away. The facilities manager decides when the floors above can be without backup, security decides who gets past the boom, and the tenants expect the lifts and air-conditioning to ride through the next outage. So a tower service is planned with that office before it is planned around the engine, and it often lands on an evening or a weekend.

Homes are no simpler. A canopy diesel beside a Sandhurst or Bryanston house, or inside an estate around Fourways and Dainfern, is often serviced while the owner is at work. We register with the estate when the booking is made, agree who lets us in to the set and the distribution board, and check that a borehole pump or electric gate on the backed-up circuit still comes on with the generator.

All generator repairs and engine overhauls are carried out on site at your premises. A service is no different: it happens in the plant room or beside the house, in a slot when the mains is on and the building or household can do without its backup for a while.

Customised maintenance contracts and SLAs are drawn up per tower, park or estate once we have seen the set. Sandton sits under the Johannesburg servicing page, and the maintenance contracts page explains how plans are put together.

Where Sandton’s standby sets live

Most of our Sandton servicing falls into one of these six settings, and each sets its own terms for a visit.

  • Sandton Central towers

Large three-phase plant in basement rooms with bulk fuel tanks. The visit is arranged through the facilities manager and is often booked outside office hours.

  • Woodmead, Sunninghill and Rivonia parks

Medium three-phase sets shared by several tenants. One person needs to own the booking, so every tenant hears about the test from the same source.

  • Complexes and apartment buildings

Shared sets in Morningside and Douglasdale blocks that back up gates, common lighting and, in taller buildings, lifts. Trustees or the managing agent agree the date and the residents get notice.

  • Fourways, Dainfern and Lonehill estates

Canopy diesels at estate homes. Gate registration, contractor hours and any noise rules are settled before the day, not at the boom.

  • Sandhurst and Bryanston homes

Larger automatic home sets, often carrying a pool or borehole pump, air-conditioning and the gate motor. We prove those loads come on when the set takes over.

  • Wendywood and Paulshof homes and businesses

Smaller house sets and medium standby units for small businesses, where battery and fuel checks count most on a set that waits weeks between outages.

Before the visit

Booking a plant-room service with building management

Most of a tower or office-park service is settled on the phone with building management. The more of it is agreed in advance, the less of the window is spent waiting at a boom or hunting for a key.

Evening and weekend slots are there because we are open 24/7; take one when that is the only window the floors can spare their backup. The service itself is quoted in writing before the day.

  • Sign-in and security

The technician’s name and vehicle go on the contractor list, so security can let us through to the basement without a call upstairs.

  • Parking and the route in

A bay on the plant-room level, or the loading bay, and the route from there to the set for oil, filters and tools.

  • Where the fuel tank sits

Whether the set runs from a bulk tank or its base tank, where the fill point is, and who orders diesel if the level is low.

  • Notice to tenants and residents

If the set will carry the building during the visit, the building sends the notice, with the date and the time window we agreed.

  • The transfer test, agreed first

The changeover is checked as a controlled test. A transfer that puts the whole building on the generator only goes ahead when management has agreed it.

A basic service (inspection and fluids) is typically R900 to R1,800; tower plant and bulk-tank sets take more, and your written quote gives the figure. The callout fee is only payable if you do not accept the quotation. If you accept the quotation, the callout fee is waived.

Common Questions

Sandton servicing questions from facilities managers, trustees and homeowners

Can our tower’s generator be serviced after hours or at a weekend?

Yes. Pick an evening or weekend slot when the floors can do without backup power, and we agree the time with building management so security and the tenants know it is planned.

What does building management need to sort out before a plant-room service?

Four things: the contractor sign-in, a place to park near the plant room, a contact who can open the room and the tank, and a decision on whether the building may be put on the generator during the visit.

Do you deal directly with our managing agent or trustees?

Yes. We can take the booking, the quote and any questions through the managing agent, and the visit record can go straight onto the body corporate’s file.

Can you prove our set will carry the lifts and air-conditioning?

There are two ways. A transfer onto the building load, agreed with management in advance, shows the set picking up the real equipment. A load bank test instead loads the set step by step from a test unit, and our cost guide puts it at R2,800 to R5,500. Tell us the kVA and we say which test suits the building.

Can you service our Bryanston home generator while we are at work?

Usually, yes. Someone needs to let us in to the set and the distribution board, and in an estate we register with the gate when you book. We explain what we found once the set is back on Auto.

Do you offer SLAs for office parks in Woodmead, Sunninghill and Rivonia?

Yes. An SLA is written for the park after we assess the set and the loads it carries, so the visit rhythm and what is tested suit that building. Breakdowns between visits on a contract site are scheduled ahead of new callouts.

Does this page cover Fourways and Dainfern as well as Sandton itself?

Yes. It covers Sandton Central and Sandhurst, Bryanston, Rivonia and Morningside, the Sunninghill and Woodmead parks, and Fourways, Dainfern, Lonehill, Wendywood and Paulshof. Randburg and Midrand have their own servicing pages, and Sandton sits under the Johannesburg page.

Our set only runs when it is tested. How often should it be serviced?

Plan on a yearly service at minimum, brought forward if the set reaches the manufacturer’s hour interval before then. A tower or estate set that only runs on test seldom gets near its hours, but the battery, coolant and diesel in the tank keep ageing.
