Generator Servicing & Maintenance in Johannesburg
Generator servicing and maintenance across Johannesburg, planned around the building as much as the engine. We look after shared sets in apartment blocks and CBD plant rooms, driveway canopies in the northern suburbs, petrol portables in Soweto and the south, and three-phase workshop diesels in Industria and Aeroton. Every visit is booked for a time that suits you, and breakdowns go to Johannesburg generator repairs.

One city, very different sets
What servicing looks like from Braamfontein to Diepkloof
In the inner city the generator is usually part of the building rather than part of a household. A shared set in a Hillbrow or Killarney apartment block, or a three-phase unit under a Marshalltown office block, keeps the lifts, water pumps, security and stairwell lights going for everyone at once. Servicing it means knowing who holds the plant-room key, where our vehicle can stand, which day the block can be without backup for a while and how much warning the residents or tenants need before the set is run.
Elsewhere the job changes street by street. Houghton, Parkhurst and Melrose homes keep a canopy diesel beside the driveway that has to start on its own when the lights go. Households in Diepkloof, Orlando and around Glenvista and Mondeor more often run a petrol portable or a small diesel. The workshops in Industria, Aeroton and Ormonde depend on open-frame three-phase diesels that drive machines, so their visits are fitted around the working day.
All generator repairs and engine overhauls are carried out on site at your premises. Servicing follows the same rule: the work is done where the set stands, in a time slot when the mains is on and the property can spare its backup. Four parts of greater Johannesburg have a page of their own because their sites differ: Sandton for towers and body corporates, Randburg for complexes and small businesses, Midrand for office parks, warehouses and SLAs, and Roodepoort for older home sets and plots. We have serviced generators across the city since 2000.
Maintenance contracts and service level agreements (SLAs) are customised for each client. We inspect and assess the generator, its condition, capacity and usage, and your requirements, then quote the plan in writing. There are no fixed packages or prices.

Across the city
From inner-city plant rooms to Soweto backyards
Johannesburg’s generators fall into six broad groups, and each one changes how a service is arranged.
Apartment blocks with one shared set
Residential buildings in Killarney, Hillbrow and the inner city share a single set across every flat. We check that it still picks up the lift motors and pumps, and the caretaker warns residents before any run.
CBD and Braamfontein plant rooms
Basement and rooftop sets reached through a parking garage or a service lift. Sign-in, the loading bay and the day-tank fill are sorted with building management when the visit is booked.
Rosebank and Parktown offices and shops
Standby sets behind office floors and retail units, where the visit goes into a quiet trading hour and tenants hear in advance if the set will carry the building.
Northern-suburb homes
Automatic canopy diesels beside Houghton and Melrose driveways, often carrying a pool or borehole pump as well as the house. The auto-start and the changeover matter as much as the oil.
Soweto and southern households
Petrol portables and small diesels in Diepkloof, Orlando, Glenvista and Mondeor. Stale petrol, a stiff pull-start and a dusty air filter are typical of what a petrol service turns up.
Industria, Aeroton and Ormonde workshops
Open-frame three-phase diesels that run machines for a full working day. These build hours quickly, so the hour meter rather than the calendar usually sets the next visit.
Contracts and SLAs
Johannesburg maintenance plans for blocks, offices and workshops
A plan starts with the building and the people who run it. These are the parts every Johannesburg plan covers, worded for the sites that ask for them most.
A walk-through with the building
We look at the set, the day tank, the changeover and the circuits it backs up with the caretaker, building manager or workshop owner, and note what has to keep running.
A schedule the site can live with
Visits are set by running hours and by the calendar, whichever comes due first, and placed on days when the mains is on and residents or staff have been told.
Start and transfer tests
The changeover is checked as a controlled test on each visit. A transfer that puts the whole building on the generator is agreed with the body corporate or building manager first.
The visit record
Trustees, landlords and insurers can all be given a record of the visit: date, running hours, work done, parts fitted, readings and findings.
Breakdowns between visits
If the generator breaks down between visits, contract clients are scheduled ahead of new callouts.
Notice to end a plan
Either side can end the plan with 30 days’ notice. Work already completed stays payable.

Common Questions
Booking and planning a generator service in Johannesburg
How do I book a generator service in Johannesburg?
Call or WhatsApp 082 057 4605 with the suburb, the make and kVA from the data plate, the date of its last service if you know it, and the person who will open up for us. The visit is booked for a time that suits you, and planned work is quoted in writing first.
Which parts of Johannesburg have their own servicing page?
Sandton, Randburg, Midrand and Roodepoort each have one, because their sites differ from the city proper. This page covers the rest: the northern suburbs, the inner city and Braamfontein, the east, the west, the south and Soweto.
What should building management arrange for a service in a CBD plant room?
Put us on the sign-in list, hold a parking bay or the loading bay, and name the person with the plant-room key. Tell us when the building can be without backup and give residents or tenants notice if the set is going to carry the building during the visit.
What does a generator service cost in Johannesburg?
A basic service (inspection and fluids) is typically R900 to R1,800, and an oil and filter change R600 to R1,400. Bigger sets and longer lists of due items cost more; your quote is free, in writing and valid for 14 days. The callout fee is only payable if you do not accept the quotation. If you accept the quotation, the callout fee is waived.
Our generator barely ran this year. Does it still need a service?
Yes. A standby set should be serviced at least once a year, or at the manufacturer’s hour interval, whichever comes first. Batteries lose charge, diesel in the tank picks up water and coolant breaks down with time, whether or not the engine turns.
Can an apartment block or office building have a maintenance contract?
Yes. We assess the set and the building first, then write a plan for that site. Several blocks or buildings can sit under one contract, with a separate schedule and record for each generator.
Do you service petrol generators in Soweto and the south?
Yes, at your home. A petrol service covers the oil, spark plug, air filter and old fuel, then a run on a real load. Run the set outdoors only, well away from doors and windows, because the exhaust carries carbon monoxide.
What if the generator breaks down before the booked service?
Call us. It then becomes a repair rather than a service, and the Johannesburg generator repairs page explains how breakdown visits and the callout fee work. The service is then rebooked once the fault is fixed.
Still unsure what the fault is? Call or WhatsApp 082 057 4605 for onsite diagnosis.
