White smoke
Generator Blowing White Smoke
White smoke from a diesel generator is often unburnt fuel: diesel that left the injector and did not ignite properly. It is not proof that coolant is in the cylinders. Possible causes include cold combustion, an injector fault, poor compression, a timing-related fault, air in the fuel, or a start that has not yet warmed. Coolant in the combustion chamber is one possibility, checked only when the smoke and the cooling system say so.

Fuel that did not burn
What does white smoke from a generator mean?
It usually means diesel vapour that was not burnt. On a cold start that can clear as the engine warms. White smoke that stays, or that smells sweet and comes with coolant loss, is a different visit.
Do not treat every white plume as a head gasket. Possible causes include injectors that are dribbling, air in the fuel, low compression, and running conditions that are simply too cold for a clean fire. Coolant is considered when the level is dropping or the smoke does not clear.
Black soot is the other page. A diesel that is over-fuelling or short of air is not diagnosed here.

Startup, fuel and coolant
What causes white smoke from a diesel generator?
White smoke during startup
A cold diesel can puff white until it fires cleanly. If it clears once the engine is warm, it may not be a fault. If it does not clear, it is booked.
Injector and fuel problems
A dribbling injector or air in the fuel leaves diesel that does not ignite. That continues on the injector and fuel pages after the smoke pattern is known.
Cold combustion
Heat, intake conditions and a short run can leave the burn incomplete. The engine is watched as it warms rather than condemned at the first puff.
Compression-related faults
A cylinder that cannot compress enough may not ignite the spray. That is an engine test, not a coolant top-up.
Cooling-system concerns
Coolant entering a cylinder can make white smoke, often with a falling coolant level. It is one possible cause. It is not assumed from the colour.
White smoke that does not clear
Smoke after the engine is at temperature, or smoke with coolant loss, is the pattern that needs diagnosis. A clearing cold puff is described separately when you book.

The engine was turning over vigorously but wouldn't fire. They quickly realized air was trapped in the high-pressure system, bled the injector lines expertly, and got us running immediately.

Kohler diesel systems are complex, but their technicians expertly navigated the engine layout to repair a high-pressure coolant leak safely and securely on the same day.
Common Questions
Questions about white smoke from a generator
What causes white smoke from a diesel generator?
Often unburnt diesel from a cold or incomplete burn. Coolant in a cylinder is possible, and it is not the automatic explanation.
Does white smoke always mean coolant?
No. Cold combustion, injectors, air in the fuel and low compression can all look white. Coolant is checked when the level is also falling.
It smokes white for a minute, then runs clean. Is that a fault?
A short white puff on a cold start can clear as the engine warms. Smoke that remains is the fault to book.
How is white smoke different from black smoke?
White is commonly unburnt fuel or, sometimes, coolant. Black is soot from a rich burn. They are diagnosed separately.
Can air in the fuel cause white smoke?
Yes. Air upsets injection and can leave fuel that does not ignite. The lines and joints are checked before parts are condemned.
The coolant is also dropping. Does that change the visit?
Yes. Mention it. Falling coolant with white smoke puts the cooling system into the same diagnosis.
What should I report?
Whether the smoke clears, whether the coolant level is falling, and whether the engine is hard to start.

Service Areas
Onsite visits across Gauteng
Technicians travel to the generator. These are the main Gauteng areas. Suburb pages sit under each region.
What to send before we attend
ProService Generator Repairs confirms an onsite visit from these details. Send what you have. A missing model number does not stop the booking.
