Generator Radiator & Cooling System Repairs

The cooling system moves heat out of a running engine. Radiator condition, coolant flow, the thermostat, the water pump, hoses, belts and the fan all sit in that job. A generator that overheats is the symptom page. This page is the system that should have kept the temperature stable, including under load. A hot radiator cap is not a customer check.

Heat has to leave the engine

Why does a generator cooling system matter?

A diesel or petrol generator turns fuel into heat as well as electricity. If the radiator, the pump or the airflow cannot move that heat, the engine shuts down or keeps climbing. That shutdown is protection, not a nuisance to clear.

Possible causes include a blocked core, low coolant, a thermostat that stays shut, a water pump that is not circulating, a slack belt, a failed fan, scale in the coolant, a leak, or a canopy with no airflow. Too much load makes all of those show up sooner.

Coolant loss is its own page. A system that is full and still hot is a circulation or airflow fault. A system that is emptying is a leak until proved otherwise.

Generator radiator problems

  • Blocked or dirty radiators

Dust, debris and scale stop heat leaving the core. A flush is considered after the outside of the core and the airflow path are seen. It is not the first guess for every hot engine.

  • Thermostat faults

A thermostat stuck closed keeps coolant out of the radiator. One stuck open can stop the engine reaching temperature. It is tested, not replaced on temperature alone.

  • Water pump problems

If the pump is not moving coolant, the top of the engine goes hot while the radiator stays cooler than it should. The pump is confirmed before the radiator is condemned.

  • Cooling hoses and belts

A collapsed hose, a glazed belt or a fan that is not turning stops circulation or airflow. Those are visible checks. They are not a reason to open a hot system.

  • Generator overheating under load

An engine that is calm at idle and hot once the building connects may be short of cooling capacity, short of airflow, or simply overloaded. The overheating page covers that symptom.

  • Cooling-system testing

Level, leaks, belt and fan condition, temperature rise and how the set behaves under load. Pressure testing is done with the engine cool enough to open safely.

Google reviews of ProService Generator Repairs

  • Google Review

Our commercial unit kept triggering a high-temp shutdown. They deep-flushed the scaled radiator, replaced a stuck thermostat, and modified our exhaust ducting to keep the block perfectly cool.

Kubota specialists! They fixed an overheating issue on our lighting plant generator quickly, flushing the radiator and replacing the water pump on site.

Common Questions

Questions about generator cooling systems

Why does a generator cooling system matter?

It removes heat the engine makes while producing power. If it cannot, the set overheats or shuts down.

The generator only gets hot under load. Is that the radiator?

It might be. Airflow, coolant circulation, a slipping belt and an overload can do the same thing. The pattern under load is the clue.

Can a dirty radiator cause overheating?

Yes. A blocked core or debris on the fins can stop heat leaving. It is inspected before parts are replaced.

Should I open the radiator when it is hot?

No. A hot cooling system is pressurised. Checks that need the cap removed wait until it is safe.

Is low coolant a radiator fault?

Low coolant is a loss or a leak until the level is explained. That diagnosis is the coolant-leak page.

Do you replace thermostats and water pumps?

When the tests show that part is the fault. Temperature alone is not the test.

What should I send about the cooling fault?

Whether it overheats at idle or under load, whether the coolant level is falling, and any high-temperature alarm text.

Still unsure what the fault is? Call or WhatsApp 082 057 4605 for onsite diagnosis.

Service Areas

Onsite visits across Gauteng

Technicians travel to the generator. These are the main Gauteng areas. Suburb pages sit under each region.

What to send before we attend

ProService Generator Repairs confirms an onsite visit from these details. Send what you have. A missing model number does not stop the booking.

Location
The suburb or site, so the visit can be booked in the right area.
Make and model
The generator brand and model, if they are known.
kVA
The size printed on the data plate.
Fuel type
Diesel, petrol, LPG, natural gas, or dual-fuel.
Controller model
The module name on the panel, when it is visible.
Fault or alarm
What the set does, and any text on the screen.
Photos
The generator, the data plate, and the controller or alarm. Send these on WhatsApp.

At idle, after a long run, or only under load. Mention if coolant is also disappearing.

Include what you have. Photos of the generator and the data plate can be sent on WhatsApp.
