Diesel injectors

Diesel Generator Injector Service

Injectors meter and spray diesel into the engine. When the spray is wrong, a diesel generator can be hard to start, run rough, smoke, or lose power under load. Not every one of those symptoms is an injector, and not every injector fault is repaired on site. This page does not include injection calibration steps.

How the diesel is burnt

What do diesel generator injectors do?

They deliver a measured spray of diesel at the right moment so the engine can burn it. A poor pattern, a blockage, a leak or a cylinder that is not contributing will show up as hard starting, uneven running, smoke or a set that will not hold load.

Possible causes of those symptoms also include air supply, fuel quality, a pump that is not delivering, and an engine that is simply overloaded. Injectors are tested when the symptom points at combustion, not because black smoke was seen once.

Cleaning, repair and replacement are different outcomes. Some injectors can be serviced. Some have to be replaced, and some of that work is not an onsite job. The visit says which, after the tests, rather than promising a clean on the canopy.

What poor spray looks like

Signs of injector problems

  • Diesel generator hard starting

A slow fire, or a start that needs several attempts, can be poor injection. It can also be air, glow or heat, or fuel that is not arriving. Those are split before injectors are pulled.

  • Black smoke and injector faults

Black smoke can mean too much fuel for the air available. An injector is one possible cause. The air filter and the load are checked in the same visit. The black-smoke page is the symptom.

  • Rough running and misfiring

One cylinder that is not burning evenly makes a diesel sound wrong and can show as smoke or a shake. That is not automatically a full set of new injectors.

  • Injector testing

Contribution, leaks and, where the equipment and the injector allow it, spray condition are assessed. Opening high-pressure lines is not a customer step.

  • Injector cleaning versus repair versus replacement

A restricted injector may clean. A leaking or damaged one may not. Replacement is recommended when the test says the part cannot be returned to service. Onsite work is only offered when that injector and that site allow it.

  • Fuel quality and injector problems

Water, dirt and aged diesel damage spray tips and seats. Filters and the tank are part of an injector visit, not a separate afterthought.

Google reviews of ProService Generator Repairs

  • Google Review

When our 3-phase diesel plant started smoking, their heavy-plant mechanics traced the issue to a microscopic crack in an injector line and fitted specialized parts within hours.

Our Kirloskar was struggling under heavy load, but they recalibrated the fuel pump and cleaned the injectors, restoring it to full operational capacity.

Common Questions

Questions about diesel generator injectors

What do diesel generator injectors do?

They spray a measured amount of diesel so the engine can burn it evenly.

Does black smoke mean the injectors are faulty?

Not by itself. Possible causes include excess fuel, a blocked air filter, overload and poor combustion. Injectors are one of those.

Can you service injectors on site?

Some checks and some repairs can be done on site. Not every injector can be rebuilt in the canopy. The test decides what has to leave the engine.

Will you calibrate the injection pump as part of this?

No. This page is injector condition. Pump calibration is not a customer procedure and is not offered as a routine step.

The engine is hard to start. Is that the injectors?

It might be. Air in the fuel, a weak supply and cold combustion are tested as well.

Can dirty diesel cause injector trouble?

Yes. Water and dirt are a common reason spray deteriorates. The fuel and the filters are checked with the injectors.

How is this different from a fuel pump repair?

The pump supplies diesel. The injectors spray it. A pump with no delivery and an injector with a bad spray are different faults.
