Oil pressure
Generator Low Oil Pressure Faults
A low oil-pressure alarm means the controller is not satisfied with the oil-pressure signal. That can be real low pressure, which can damage the engine, or a false alarm from the sensor, the wiring or the module. The two are not the same repair. The shutdown is not bypassed to make the set run.
- Real pressure versus a false alarm
- Shutdowns are not bridged
- Level checked before the sensor is blamed
- Onsite across Gauteng

Alarm is not the same as a gauge
What does a low oil pressure alarm mean?
It means the engine was stopped, or is being warned, because the oil-pressure input looks wrong. Possible causes include a low oil level, the wrong oil, a restricted filter, a faulty pressure sensor, a wiring fault, an oil-pump problem, engine wear, or a controller input that is misreading a healthy engine.
Actual low pressure is confirmed with a mechanical test where the engine can be run safely for that check. A sensor that reads low while that test shows normal pressure is a sensing fault. Swapping the sensor without the comparison can hide a real lubrication problem.
An oil leak can drop the level until pressure falls. The leak page is for oil on the outside of the engine. This page is the pressure alarm, whether or not a drip is visible.

Level, sensor and real pressure
Why low oil pressure should not be ignored
Running an engine with genuinely low oil pressure can destroy bearings. Ignoring a false alarm can also leave a real fault in place. The confirmation comes first.
Low oil level
The level is the first check, with the engine stopped and settled. A level below the mark can alarm even when the pump and the sensor are healthy.
Oil pressure sensor faults
A failed sender can shut a healthy engine down, or it can hide low pressure. It is compared with a direct pressure reading, not replaced as a guess.
Controller and wiring problems
A broken wire, a poor earth or a module input can display low pressure. The controller page covers the module once the sender and the real pressure are known.
Oil filter and lubrication problems
A blocked filter or the wrong grade of oil can drop pressure. Those are checked before the oil pump is condemned.
Mechanical oil pressure problems
A worn pump or worn engine bearings are possible when a mechanical gauge confirms the pressure is actually low. That is an engine repair, not a reset.
How we confirm actual oil pressure
Level, the alarm text, the sensor circuit and a mechanical pressure reading where it is safe to take one. The shutdown is left in place until that result is known.

They performed exceptional preventative maintenance on my Steco unit, changing the oil and ensuring all safety sensors were functioning correctly before the load shedding schedule worsened.
Common Questions
Questions about low generator oil pressure
What does a low oil pressure alarm mean?
The controller has seen an oil-pressure signal it does not trust. That may be real low pressure, or a sensor, wiring or module fault.
Is the alarm always a bad sensor?
No. Treating every alarm as a false sensor can leave an engine with genuinely low pressure running. The pressure is confirmed.
Can I bypass the oil-pressure shutdown?
No. That protection is there to stop the engine. Bridging it can destroy the bearings if the pressure is really low.
The oil level looks fine. Can it still be low pressure?
Yes. A filter, the pump, wear, or a sensor fault can alarm with the level on the mark. The level being correct does not end the test.
It starts, then shuts down on oil pressure. What happens next?
The alarm text is kept. Level and actual pressure are checked before another start is forced. A start-then-stop from this alarm is not a fuel fault by default.
Could an oil leak cause the alarm?
Yes, if the leak has dropped the level. A wet engine with a normal level is a leak. A low level is a pressure risk.
How do you tell a false alarm from real low pressure?
A mechanical pressure reading is compared with the sensor and the controller. They have to agree before the sender is blamed.
What should I send with an oil-pressure alarm?
The exact alarm words, whether the level is low, and whether you can see an oil leak.

Service Areas
Onsite visits across Gauteng
Technicians travel to the generator. These are the main Gauteng areas. Suburb pages sit under each region.
What to send before we attend
ProService Generator Repairs confirms an onsite visit from these details. Send what you have. A missing model number does not stop the booking.
- Location
- The suburb or site, so the visit can be booked in the right area.
- Make and model
- The generator brand and model, if they are known.
- kVA
- The size printed on the data plate.
- Fuel type
- Diesel, petrol, LPG, natural gas, or dual-fuel.
- Controller model
- The module name on the panel, when it is visible.
- Fault or alarm
- What the set does, and any text on the screen.
- Photos
- The generator, the data plate, and the controller or alarm. Send these on WhatsApp.
