Hour meters
Generator Running Hours Explained
Generator running hours are the time the engine has been running, counted by an hour meter or by the controller. They are one of the two clocks in a service schedule. The other is calendar time. A low hour reading does not mean the set needs no maintenance.
- Hours are engine run time
- The controller is the usual place
- Low hours still age
- Onsite across Gauteng

What the number counts
What are generator running hours?
They are accumulated running time, usually in hours and tenths. They increase only while the engine runs. They do not count the weeks a standby set spends waiting, and they do not by themselves describe oil condition, battery age or fuel quality.
On many sets the figure is on the controller screen, sometimes behind a menu labelled hours or engine hours. Older sets may have a separate electro-mechanical meter on the panel. If you cannot see it, a photo of the controller is more useful than a guess.
Service schedules use the figure to trigger oil, filters and deeper work. If the meter has been replaced or reset, the displayed hours are not the engine’s true life. Say so. Condition and any earlier records then matter more than the number on the screen.

High hours and low hours
Why running hours matter
Where to find the hour meter
Controller screen first, then a small meter on the panel if the set has one. The engine plate does not show hours. Hours are a live reading, not a stamped rating.
Service based on hours
When the schedule’s hour point is reached, that service is due. The intervals page explains how that point sits beside a calendar limit. This page is only the meter.
Running hours versus calendar time
Hours measure work. Months measure ageing. A standby set can be early on hours and late on the calendar visit at the same time.
High-hour generators
A high reading means the engine has done a lot of work. It does not, by itself, mean the set is worn out or that a particular part has failed.
Low-hour standby generators
Batteries age, fuel deteriorates, coolant degrades, seals age, corrosion can start, and filters can perish. The set still needs testing. Low hours are not a clean bill of health.
If the hour meter has been reset
The screen starts again. The engine does not. Tell the technician. Service planning then uses condition and any previous records, not the new zero.

Common Questions
Questions about generator running hours
What are generator running hours?
The time the engine has been running, added up on a meter or the controller.
Where do I find the hour meter?
Usually on the controller display. Some older panels have a separate hour meter. A photo of that screen is the easy way to send it.
Do hours increase when the generator is off?
No. Only running time counts. Standing time is why calendar servicing still exists.
Can a low-hour generator skip maintenance?
No. Fuel, coolant, batteries and seals age without hours. A standby set with a low reading can still be due.
The meter was replaced. Are the hours wrong?
The new meter is wrong as a life total if it was reset. Say that it was replaced so the service is not planned on a false low number.
Are running hours the only measure of condition?
No. Leaks, smoke, alarms, load behaviour and calendar age all sit beside the meter.
How do hours affect the next service?
They are compared with the hour interval in that engine’s schedule. The intervals page explains the comparison. The how-often page is the short version.
